Tricksters & Writers – Phase 3 & 4 Announcement

Tricksters & Writers is excited to announce the two writers selected to take part in the live table-reads at this year’s VIWFF!

Arnolda Dufour-Bowes (Métis) with her script, 215 & Counting, and Kassia Ward (Cree) with her script, Calling the Buffalo, will both take part in the event, with excerpts of their screenplays read out at the VIFF Centre on Thursday, March 9th by local Indigenous actors.

Arnolda and Kassia were both part of the first national cohort of Tricksters & Writers, WIFTV’s screenwriting program for Indigenous Pa‡ki·s (women, two-spirit, Indiqueer) writers. Following the table-read at VIWFF, Arnolda and Kassia will take part in a virtual table-read workshop along with four additional Tricksters & Writers participants:

  • Samantha Loney (Métis) with her script, Daughters
  • Rachel Garrick (Ojibwe) with her script, Kokum
  • Tamara Voudrach (Inuvialuit/Cree) with her script, Time and Tundra
  • Jenn Ashton (Squamish) with her script, The Set Up

The Tricksters & Writers program, now in its sixth iteration, includes a 12-week workshop led by writer and Tricksters & Writers program coordinator, Shaelyn Johnston (Ojibwe/Irish-Canadian) and program founder, Doreen Manuel (Secwepemc/Ktunaxa).

Writers who complete their screenplays then have an opportunity to be paired up with a story editor to work on the next draft of their script. Story editors include: Eva Thomas, Roxanne Whitebean, Jamie-Lee Reardon, David Geary, and Jordan Wheeler.

The live table-read event will take place Thursday, March 9th from 12:30pm-2:30pm at the VIFF Centre as part of VIWFF 2023. Readings will be facilitated by Shaelyn Johnston. For more information and to register to attend, click here: https://viwff.eventive.org/schedule.
