Writing TV Movies in a Changing Market, with Roslyn Muir
Breaking into the film industry as a screenwriter can feel overwhelming, but selling a TV movie to Hallmark or Lifetime is a great place to start. Producers of TV movies are open to pitches from new writers as long as you know the unique structure and elements of the genre. Whether you’d like to write a holiday rom-com or a thriller, you’ll discover the 9-act structure used by networks. Screenwriter and instructor Roslyn Muir will give an overview of the TV movie genre, reveal what networks and streamers are now looking for, describe how to pitch producers, and explain the structure and elements a script needs. Also, don’t miss out on the Q&A toward the end of the workshop with Ronny from Reckless Pictures, a leading film and television production company in Vancouver, BC!
Roslyn Muir is an author and multi-genre, award-winning screenwriter currently in development on a Hallmark rom-com. She was a writer on the Global/CBS one-hour drama, Ransom, now on Netflix, and has written several TV movies that have aired on Lifetime TV, CTV, Super Channel, and internationally. Muir also wrote and produced the dramatic feature film, The Birdwatcher, and has authored a non-fiction screenwriting book, Writing a TV Movie: An Insider’s Guide to Launching a Screenwriting Career. (Three Ocean Press, 2021.) She has also written a middle-grade fantasy book series, The Chimera’s Apprentice, and has an MFA from UBC’s School of Creative Writing.
